In a "co-op", residents own shares of the entire building or complex, and govern how it is run. A "co-op" can provide seniors with much greater opportunities for socialization than living alone, which can help you live longer. "Co-ops: are not for everyone. The ideal resident wants to be involved in running the community, serving on a committee or possibly even being on the board of directors, which oversees the "co-op". This type of living differs from assisted living or continuing care retirement communities in that it doesn’t provide healthcare services. Residents of a senior co-op should be active and healthy, without significant medical needs.
